The second most common type of cancer (after breast cancer) in case of women in Hungary between 15 and 44 years old is the cervical cancer that is caused by the HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection in 95% of the cases.
Researches identified more than 150 HPV-types, from which the majority are harmless and can be defeated by our immune system without help or being recognized. However, 14 high-risk viruses have got identified that can lead to cancer. From these, the viruses with the numbers 16 and 18 contain the highest risk since the danger of the outbreaking of cervical cancer is 20 times higher in case of these viruses.
80% of the adults who have an active sexual life go through an HPV infection during their lifetime, even without regularly changing partners. And even though this might be surprising, the disease also affects our male partners since they carry and redistribute the virus in case of an infection. The newest researches show that it can also lead to malignant cancers (penis, colon, oral cavity, throat) in case of man and can trigger changes in the sexual organs.
The first and most important step to prevent or diagnose the disease early is the participation in screenings that should be done annually, even if you are living in a steady relationship.

- The next step is the bimanual gynaecological examination
- After that the cytological and the HPV-X sampling take place
- The complex gynaecological screening is concluded with an ultrasound screening of the vaginal pelvis
