Lichen scelorus is a quite rare skin disease that affects both genders and which cause has not yet been clarified. Supposedly, immunological processes are causing its formation. In rare cases, it can disappear without intervention, but characteristically, it needs a long-term treatment. In 5 % of the cases, even a cancer disease can develop on the affected skin part, which is why a regular control treatment is important. The disease can appear anywhere on the body but mostly affects the intimate organs. Here, also the symptoms are significantly stronger. First, you can notice the signs of inflammation, a burning and itching feeling. The skin is initially red and later you can see a whitish discoloration which is also different from its surrounding area when palpated.

The alteration is predominantly affecting women. Since it mostly appears after the menopause, it is often confused with the symptoms of the female hormone deficiency. Often, the painful sexual life and the torturous itching are the leading symptoms since the female intimate area is not that much in sight, which is why skin alterations are not recognized immediately. As a result of the atrophy, the skin becomes easily brittle, which leads to pain during sexual intercourse.

Pathogens also settle on the wounds more easily, which is why lichen sclerosus is often accompanied by fungal or bacterial infections, which further worsens the situation and makes it more difficult to identify the underlying disease.

After the local treatments the erbium (Er:YAG) and neodymium (Nd:YAG) laser treatments represent a new step stone in the treatment of Lichen sclerosus. In addition to the soothing effect, it is also important to mention the cancer-preventive impact. We use 3-4 treatments every 3-4 weeks, which are painless.
